Is the Plains Hotel Going, Going, Gone?

By Greg Hluska

An out of province developer filed documents with the City of Regina, outlining a plan to demolish the Plains Hotel and build a hotel/condos on the corner of Albert Street and Victoria Avenue.  Don’t get out your wrecking balls just yet – the developer has to file a discretionary-use application, go through a review process and get City Council to officially approve the new development.  However, I hope that the process is smooth and we get another beautiful, new building in downtown Regina.

Downtown Regina badly needs two things – more hotel rooms and more places to live.  While this project is far from the affordable housing of my dreams, it is a step in the right direction.  The Plains has history, but that corner has a certain mystique and deserves one more beautiful building to top it all off.

Now give me a jazz club on the ground floor….
