Do you know how our government works?

By stacey

The debate regarding how well our Canadian Parliamentary Democracy works, and how well for whom, aside, Rick Mercer reminds us why it is so damn important for Canadians to know how our government works, and why it’s so scary that the majority of us don’t.

More Election Talk

By Greg Hluska

Looks like this fall will be a very exciting time for Regina. Our city is poised for a municipal election. The Regina Douglas Park by-election will be held. And Federal politicians appear ready to bring down Stephen Harper’s government and force another election.

I hope that election season 2009 is not marred by negative campaigning.

Cheers for Regina Enumerators!

By stacey

The enumerator came by tonight! This is incredibly exciting; there I was, entering my second hour in front of my computer, when my doorbell rang. Wondering whether to stop working, I finally made my way to the door… and there was the enumerator! Like the eight year old in line to see Santa at the mall, I broke into a huge grin and happily gave the pertinent information.

To me, voting is exciting because it’s an opportunity to participate in our democratic process. Yawn, right? Wrong. Read more »

Regina Douglas Park is Heating Up II

By Greg Hluska

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that the Saskatchewan Party was holding its nomination meeting for Regina Douglas Park on August 12, 2009.  Well, that meeting has come and gone and the Saskatchewan Party finally has a candidate.  Regina based lawyer, Kathleen Peterson was acclaimed and will be squaring off against Dwain Lingenfelter and Victor Becker Lau in the (hopefully) soon-t0-be-announced by-election.

While I am looking forward to watching this race unfold, I’m feeling a little bit let down by the preliminaries.  The Saskatchewan Party’s site contains a particularly troubling quote that may signal the tone for this election.  Peterson was quoted as saying, “The NDP vision is focused on the past, with leadership that represents a time in Saskatchewan’s history when both the economy and population were shrinking.”  I don’t think that the Saskatchewan electoral system needs negative campaigning, especially when there are so many constructive things to say about our constituency. The Regina Douglas Park By-Election

By Greg Hluska

It has been almost two months since Harry Van Mulligen announced his resignation from Regina Douglas Park and the major provincial parties appear to be gearing up for a major race.  As I see it, this constituency, a long-time N.D.P. stronghold, is incredibly important for all of this province’s two major political parties.  The N.D.P. desperately wants this by-election to be a coronation of sorts for their new leader, Dwain Lingenfelter.  The Saskatchewan Party, on the other hand, wants this by-election to be proof that their vision for Saskatchewan is helping them make in-roads in urban markets.

This by-election is incredibly important to me as well.  In my wildest dreams, this by-election will emerge as an opportunity to discuss important issues.  An election is not only a chance to vote, it is a chance to get provincial politicians to go on the record and talk about important issues like the environment, the social deficit, affordable housing and economic development.  Because of the importance attached to this particular by-election, the Regina Douglas Park race will be a great barometer of Saskatchewan politics and of the direction of Saskatchewan political parties. Regina Douglas Park is Heating Up

By Greg Hluska

The Saskatchewan Party recently announced that they are holding a nomination meeting for Regina Douglas Park on August 12, 2009.  The nomination meeting will be held at 6:30 pm at St. Mary’s Hall on 2020 Winnipeg Street.  After this meeting, there will be three confirmed candidates in Regina Douglas Park.  On July 7, the New Democratic Party announced that Dwain Lingenfelter will be their candidate, and on July 10, the Saskatchewan Green Party announced that perennial candidate, Victor Becker Lau will be flying their flag.  Unfortunately, there is no information on the Saskatchewan Liberal Party’s intentions for that election.

So far, the election seems like it will be another interesting one.  Victor Becker Lau has already come out swinging, pointing out four major issues that affect the constituency.  In Becker Lau’s mind, nuclear power, poverty, affordable education and electoral reform are going to be key issues in this by-election.  Larissa Shasko (Leader of the Saskatchewan Green Party) fired a well-timed salvo at the Saskatchewan Liberal Party, stating that “A two-party system between the NDP and the SaskParty is failing the environmental and social aspirations of the people of Saskatchewan.”
